Accredited Mental Health Social Worker

What is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker?

An Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) is a qualified allied health professional with training and expertise in the assessment and treatment of mental health conditions. They use evidence-based psychological therapies and a holistic approach to help individuals and families improve their mental health, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life.

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers assess people’s mental health and provide counselling and evidence-based “talk therapies.” Unlike medical doctors, they do not prescribe medication.

In Australia, Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are recognised mental health professionals:

  • They hold a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Social Work.
  • They complete a minimum of two years of supervised clinical experience in specialised mental health roles.
  • They are accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
  • They are recognised Medicare providers and can provide Focussed Psychological Strategies under a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan.
