What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a regulated professional trained in the science of how people think, feel, behave and learn. They use this understanding to help individuals, families, and communities manage challenges, solve problems, and improve overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Psychologists assess people’s mental health and support them through counselling and evidence-based “talk therapies.” Unlike medical doctors, they do not prescribe medication.

In Australia, psychologists are highly trained and regulated professionals:

  • They must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia
  • They must also be listed with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • They complete at least six years of university study and supervised experience
  • They are required to continue professional development throughout their careers
  • They must follow a strict code of ethics set by the Australian Psychological Society
