What is a Psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health. Psychiatrists are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of mental health conditions by assessing both mental and physical health.

They develop personalised treatment plans that may include therapy, medication or a combination of both. Psychiatrists are also qualified to prescribe and manage medications and adjust treatment plans as needed.

In Australia, psychiatrists undergo extensive training, including at least 11 years of medical education and supervised clinical experience. They must complete specialist training accredited by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

All psychiatrists must also be registered with the relevant state medical board to practise.
